By A Correspondent | ZimEye | Zimbabwe has been plunged into mourning following the death of Dr. Victor Matemadanda, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique and Eswatini, who passed away early Saturday morning.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, which confirmed the veteran politician, liberation war fighter, and diplomat’s death in a statement expressing condolences to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Matemadanda family, and the nation.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade mourns the passing on of our Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini, Dr. Victor Matemadanda, early this morning,” the ministry said.
“The Ministry extends its heartfelt condolences to the President, His Excellency Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, the Matemadanda family and the nation of Zimbabwe.”
Presidential spokesperson Nick Mangwana also paid tribute to Matemadanda, describing his passing as a major loss to the country.
“Ambassador Victor Matemadanda passed away last night. This is a deeply saddening loss,” Mangwana wrote.
“Dr. Matemadanda served as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini. Sincere condolences go to His Excellency the President, whom he represented with dedication, and to his family, friends, colleagues, and the nation at large.”
Matemadanda was one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable liberation war veterans and served in several senior political and government roles over the years. He rose through the ranks of ZANU PF and became the party’s National Political Commissar, a position that placed him at the centre of mobilisation and organisational affairs.
Known for his outspoken style and unwavering loyalty to the ruling party, Matemadanda was a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s political landscape for decades. He also served as Deputy Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs before being appointed ambassador.
His diplomatic posting to Mozambique and Eswatini saw him represent Zimbabwe in two strategically important neighbouring countries, helping strengthen bilateral relations and regional cooperation.
He has died soon after a meeting was held to assist controversial convicted fraudster Wicknell Chivayo to obtain an Eswatini diplomatic passport. Eswatini was Matemadanda’s second assigned country. Matemadanda was during the period accused of assisting a group of former generals to meet govt officials in Mozambique for their lobbying against Emmerson Mnangagwa.
News of his death has triggered an outpouring of condolences from political figures, diplomats, war veterans and ordinary Zimbabweans, many remembering him as a committed liberation fighter and dedicated public servant.
Details surrounding the cause of death and funeral arrangements had not yet been officially announced at the time of publication.
His passing marks the end of a long political and diplomatic career that spanned Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, post-independence politics and international representation.
