By A Correspondent | The Government has not disclosed the cause of death of Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini, Victor Matemadanda, whose passing has reignited debate about the political legacy of the war veterans who played a central role in the events leading to the removal of former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Mr Nick Mangwana, announced Matemadanda’s death on Sunday but provided no details regarding the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Writing on his X account, Mr Mangwana said the diplomat died on Saturday night.

“Ambassador Victor Matemadanda passed away last night. This is a deeply saddening loss,” he wrote.

“Dr Matemadanda served as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini. Sincere condolences go to His Excellency the President, whom he represented with dedication, and to his family, friends, colleagues and the nation at large.”

Matemadanda rose to prominence as one of the leading figures within the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association and became a key ally of Christopher Mutsvangwa during the bitter succession battles that engulfed Zanu PF in the years preceding Mugabe’s removal from power.

Together with other influential war veterans, Matemadanda was among the loudest critics of Mugabe’s administration during its final years. The group accused the former president and those around him of presiding over economic decline, corruption, unemployment, and the abandonment of the liberation struggle’s promises.

Their criticism resonated with many Zimbabweans who were enduring cash shortages, company closures, rising poverty, and diminishing economic opportunities. The war veterans positioned themselves as defenders of the national interest and advocates of political renewal, helping to build public support for the military intervention that ultimately brought President Emmerson Mnangagwa to power.

The message promoted at the time was that removing Mugabe would unlock economic recovery, attract investment, create jobs, and improve living standards. The new administration’s “Zimbabwe is Open for Business” slogan was presented as evidence that a new economic era was about to begin.

However, nearly eight years later, many of the economic problems cited as justification for the political transition remain unresolved. Zimbabwe continues to grapple with currency instability, high unemployment, company closures, rising costs of living, and a growing dependence on diaspora remittances and the informal economy.

Critics argue that the promises made during the 2017 transition have not translated into meaningful economic improvements for ordinary citizens. While some of the political actors who championed the change went on to occupy senior government and diplomatic positions, many Zimbabweans continue to face the same hardships that existed before the transition.

Matemadanda himself became one of the beneficiaries of the post-2017 political order, serving as Deputy Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs before being appointed ambassador.

His death comes at a time when sections of the war veterans movement are once again divided over the direction of the country, governance issues, and debates surrounding political succession and constitutional term limits.

While government officials have focused on Matemadanda’s service as a liberation war veteran and diplomat, others are likely to remember him as one of the key political figures who helped mobilise support for the events of November 2017 and the promises of economic renewal that accompanied them.

As questions remain over both the circumstances of his death and the legacy of the political transition he helped champion, Matemadanda’s passing is likely to reignite discussion about whether the aspirations that accompanied the rise of the Second Republic were ultimately fulfilled.
