Getting a driver's licence in Zimbabwe runs through the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID), and the sequence has not changed in years: pass the provisional exam, learn to drive, pass the road test, then collect a licence. Knowing what each stage tests saves both money and repeat attempts.
Step 1: the provisional licence
The provisional exam is a written test on road signs, rules of the road and basic vehicle knowledge. Candidates prepare from the official highway code booklet and from practice questions used by driving schools. A provisional licence is valid for a limited period and allows you to learn on the road with a qualified driver beside you and learner plates displayed.
Most failures at this stage come from guessing on road-sign categories. Learn the shapes and colours systematically — regulatory, warning and information signs — rather than memorising individual pictures.
Step 2: learning to drive
You can learn with a registered driving school or with a qualified driver, but a school is worth the money for one specific reason: instructors know exactly what the VID examiners look for, especially in the yard test. Ask the school which vehicle you will be tested in and practise in that vehicle.
Step 3: the road test
The test has two parts. The yard test covers controlled manoeuvres — the reverse into a bay, the incline start, and precise control at very low speed. The road test puts you into traffic and assesses observation, positioning, junction discipline, signalling and speed choice.
Common reasons candidates fail:
- Rolling back on the incline start.
- Touching or crossing the yard markers on the reverse.
- Not doing visible observation — mirrors and shoulder checks the examiner can see.
- Stopping over the line at junctions and stop signs.
- Hesitating so much at junctions that it becomes a hazard.
Treat the examiner's instructions literally and drive deliberately. Smooth and slightly cautious passes; rushed and confident often does not.
Licence classes
Zimbabwean licences are issued by class, covering motorcycles, light motor vehicles, heavy vehicles and vehicles with trailers, among others. Drivers who intend to work in haulage or public transport need the appropriate heavy class and, for passenger and goods work, additional authorisation such as a defensive driving certificate or a retest depending on the employer's and the regulator's requirements. Fees, bookings and paperwork
Test bookings, provisional exams and licence issuing all carry fees set by the responsible authorities, and they are revised from time to time. Confirm the current amounts at the depot or through official channels before you travel, and pay only at official pay points — never to someone offering a "guaranteed pass". Buying a licence is not just fraud; it puts an untrained driver on the road with your name on the record.
Renewals, replacements and foreign licences
- Replacement of a lost licence requires a police report and an application at the issuing authority.
- Metal to plastic conversion has been run through the licensing authority; take your existing licence and identity documents.
- Foreign licences may be usable for a limited period by visitors, and residents are generally expected to convert. Confirm the current rules with the licensing authority before driving long term on a foreign licence.

After you pass
A licence is the beginning, not the end.
