Insurance in Zimbabwe: What Is Worth Having and What to Check

Motor, household, life and business cover explained — which policies actually earn their premium in Zimbabwe, the exclusions that void claims, and how to claim well.

Insurance is bought grudgingly and understood poorly, which is why so many claims are declined. This guide covers insurance in Zimbabwe in practical terms: what each type does, what voids it, and how to claim without a fight.

Motor insurance

  • Third party is the legal minimum. It covers damage or injury you cause to others — not your own vehicle.
  • Comprehensive adds cover for your own vehicle, subject to an excess you pay on each claim.
  • Check: the excess, whether the vehicle is insured for an agreed or market value, whether towing and roadside assistance are included, and whether cover extends across the border — it usually does not without a separate arrangement. See our border guide.

Driving without at least third-party cover is an offence, and an accident without it can be financially catastrophic.

Household and property insurance

Buildings cover protects the structure; contents cover protects what is inside. Insure the replacement cost, not what you paid years ago — under-insurance means claims are scaled down proportionally, which is the single most common household claim disappointment. Photograph your possessions, keep receipts for valuable items, and tell the insurer about anything specified separately such as jewellery or equipment.

Life and funeral cover

Life assurance pays a sum on death, usually to nominated beneficiaries, and is the appropriate cover where dependants rely on your income. Funeral cover handles the immediate cost of a funeral and is a different product with a different purpose — most families need both, at different scales. See our funeral cover guide.

Health cover

Medical aid is dealt with separately in our medical aid guide. The key point is that it is the cover most likely to be used and the one where shortfalls are routine.

Business insurance

For a small business, the covers that matter most are fire and perils on premises and stock, theft, public liability, goods in transit, and — often overlooked — business interruption, which covers lost income while you rebuild. Insure stock at the value you would have to pay to replace it, which in an inflationary environment is not what you paid. Our small business guide covers valuation thinking.

What voids or reduces claims

  1. Non-disclosure. Not declaring something material — a prior claim, a modification, the real use of a vehicle — is the classic reason for a decline.
  2. Under-insurance, which reduces the payout proportionally.
  3. Lapsed premiums. A missed month can leave you uncovered on the day it matters.
  4. Excluded causes written into the policy.
  5. Late notification. Policies require you to report within a set period.
  6. No police report where one is required for theft or an accident.

Claiming well

  • Notify the insurer immediately, in writing, and keep the reference.
  • Get a police report where required — same day if possible.
  • Photograph damage before anything is moved or repaired.
  • Keep receipts, valuations and the policy schedule together.
  • Do not authorise repairs before the insurer approves them.
  • If a claim is declined, ask for the reason in writing and escalate through the insurer's complaints process, and then to the regulator if unresolved.

Choosing an insurer

Check that the company is registered and regulated, ask people you know how their claims were actually handled, read the exclusions before the benefits, and be careful of any policy sold with pressure and no written schedule. Currency matters too: understand whether premiums and payouts are in local currency or United States dollars — see our currency explainer.

Frequently asked questions

Is third party insurance enough?

It is the legal minimum and covers damage to others, not your own vehicle. Whether comprehensive is worth it depends on the value of your car and your circumstances.

What is an excess?

The portion of a claim you pay yourself. A higher excess lowers the premium but increases what you pay when you claim.

Why was my claim reduced?

Most often under-insurance: if an item was insured for less than its replacement cost, the payout is scaled down proportionally.

Does my Zimbabwean motor policy cover me in South Africa?

Usually not without separate cross-border cover. Arrange it before travelling.

What should I do immediately after an accident?

Ensure everyone is safe, report to the police, photograph the scene and damage, exchange details, and notify your insurer the same day.
