Checking ZIMSEC results is one of the most stressful moments in a Zimbabwean student's year, and it is also the moment when scam websites and "results agents" are busiest. What ZIMSEC releases, and when
The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) administers the Grade 7, Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations. Papers are written in two main sittings each year — a mid-year sitting and a much larger end-of-year sitting — and results for each sitting are released several months after the last paper is written.
ZIMSEC announces the release date publicly a short time before results go live. Because that date moves every year, do not rely on last year's date: watch the official announcement and the schools themselves, which are informed at the same time.
What you need before you check
- Your candidate number — the number printed on your statement of entry and on the exam desk slip.
- Your centre number — the number identifying the school or examination centre where you wrote.
- The examination level and year — for example Ordinary Level, and the sitting you wrote.
If you have lost your statement of entry, your school keeps a record of both numbers. That is the fastest route — the school office can read them back to you.
Step by step: checking results online
- Start from the official ZIMSEC website, zimsec.co.zw. Type the address yourself rather than clicking a link from a WhatsApp group — copycat sites use similar-looking names.
- Open the results section from the site's own menu. ZIMSEC changes the layout occasionally, so follow the current menu rather than an old bookmarked link.
- Enter your candidate number and centre number exactly as they appear, including any leading zeros.
- Select the correct level and sitting. Choosing the wrong sitting is the single most common reason a candidate sees "no record found".
- Save or screenshot what you see. The online display is a preview, not a certificate — but a screenshot is useful when you follow up with your school.
On release day the site is under heavy load. If it is slow, wait and retry later rather than switching to an unofficial mirror that asks you to pay or to enter a phone number.
The other ways to get your results
- Through your school or examination centre. Centres receive printed result slips. This is the authoritative copy and the one colleges will ask to see.
- Through mobile or SMS services where ZIMSEC has enabled them for a given sitting. Availability changes from year to year, so confirm on the official site before paying for any SMS service.
Statement of entry, result slip and certificate — the difference
These three documents are not interchangeable, and mixing them up causes real delays with applications:
- A statement of entry is issued before the exam and proves you were registered for specific subjects.
- A result slip is issued after marking and lists your grades. It is what most institutions accept while waiting for certificates.
- A certificate is the permanent document issued later and collected through your centre.
When something is wrong
"No record found"
Check the sitting and level first, then the digits of both numbers. If those are correct, the problem is on the register and only your centre can resolve it with ZIMSEC.
A subject is missing
A missing subject usually means the entry did not go through for that paper, or the script was not matched to your candidate number. Report it to your centre immediately — there is a limited window in which this can be corrected.
Results withheld
ZIMSEC withholds results while an examination irregularity is being investigated. The candidate is not always the one under investigation — an entire centre can be affected. Your centre will be told the reason and the process; nothing you do online will change it.
You believe a grade is wrong
ZIMSEC operates a re-mark process with its own fee and deadline, applied for through your centre. Apply early: the deadline is short and it is counted from the release date, not from when you saw your results. Confirm the current fee with ZIMSEC or your school, as it is reviewed periodically.
Protecting yourself from results scams
- No genuine service needs your EcoCash PIN or your bank OTP to show you results.
- Nobody can "upgrade", "fix" or "buy" a ZIMSEC grade. Anyone offering that is committing fraud and will simply take your money.
- Be careful with sites that ask you to share a link with ten friends before revealing results — that is a data-harvesting pattern, not an examinations board.
